How to Create Search Engine Optimized Product Pages for Your Online Store
|
|
Keywords, keyword phrases, or search terms are the words that your customers will type into the search engines when looking for the product or products that they’re trying to buy. If you want your customers to find your website then you’ll need to strategically implement those keywords into your webpage.
For example, if you were selling notebook computers, and you were creating a product page for the Dell XYZ Notebook computer then your main keywords would be “Dell XYZ Notebook”. |
Furthermore, you can also use and combine more keywords that customers are likely to use when searching for that product. i.e. “buy” Dell XYZ Notebook with “free shipping”.
The added key words “buy” and “free shipping” are high ranking keywords which will help boost your search engine rankings and increase the chances of the customer clicking on that page, especially if that’s what they want to do – buy that product with free shipping. And all of these keywords should be placed within the most important parts of the web page, starting in your title tag.

And all of these keywords should be placed within the most important parts of the web page, starting in your title tag.
Title tag
When it comes to building specific product pages, the most important place to insert your most important keywords is within your Title tag, or the title of the webpage.
If you’re building your website with a storefront builder from BigCommerce or Volusion then you can easily add the title to the title tag of the web page from within the administration area of the storefront builder program. But if you’re using a web development software program such as Dreamweaver for example, then you can enter the coding mode of the web page and enter in the title of the product page within the <Title> tag.
“Buy the Dell XYZ Notebook with Free Shipping”
And with some products, such as technology products, you can also add the manufacturer part number as well seeing that when there are multiple versions of the same product customers will want to be sure that they’re getting the right one.

Description tag
After the title tag comes the description tag which comes right below the title tag within the HTML coding area of your webpage.
In your description tag, you will once again place your most important keywords in this tag while adding a brief description of the product or your company as well. For example:
<meta name="description" CONTENT="Buy the all new Dell XYZ Notebook today and receive Free Shipping when you order online. ABC Company is your one stop source for the best Notebook computer deals…"/>
Or:
<meta name="description" CONTENT="Buy now! Dell XYZ Notebook 15z X15Z-5834ELS Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-2430M 2.4GHz, 6GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6 Display, Windows 8 Home Premium 64-bit,..."/>
Or:
<meta name="description" CONTENT="The Dell XYZ Notebook 15.6-Inch Notebook, The thinnest 15-inch PC on the planet,…Additionally, this Inspiron Notebook includes award-winning Intel Wireless..."/>
Keep in mind that whenever you write a title for your title tag and description tag, this is what your customers will see when they search for the product on Google.
They will see the title, URL and the description of your web page on the search engine results and then decide if they want to click on your link or not, based upon what they see.
This is what your customers will see on Google.

Therefore, not only does your title and description tag have to be optimized for search engine ranking, buy it also has to persuade your customers to click on the link as well. And this is why it is important to implement action words into the description and title as well. For example:
<meta name="description" CONTENT="CLICK HERE NOW! The Dell XYZ 15.6-Inch Notebook is on sale now with free shipping available. The thinnest 15-inch PC on the planet, the Dell XYZ 15z (model X15z- 5834ELS) comes with..."/>
However, your most important keywords and your best, yet short sales command, needs to remain in your title tag, as the title tag is what most people will look at first on the search engine results page.

Keyword tag
Inside the HTML coding area of your webpage you will see the <keyword> tag as well. And since your customers will not be able to see this tag, then it’s only necessary to place your keywords in that tag, separated by commas, and not in a structured sentence as you would within your title and description tag. For example:
<meta NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Buy, online, Dell XYZ Notebook, X15z-5834ELS, laptop, computer, Free Shipping, on sale"/>
After you have entered your keywords and keyword phrases within your title, description and keyword tag, then you can switch back to design mode in your webpage and continue to implement your most important keywords within the product information of the webpage itself.

Enter the complete product name starting with the name of the manufacturer of the product.
Dell XYZ 15z X15z-5834ELS 15.6" Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-2430M Processor
Next, you’ll want to add your best product image for that product to the left or the right of the product title. (NOTE: Images and product information can be obtained from the manufactures website)

Insert the title of the product to the alt tags in design mode if applicable or code mode.
<img alt="Dell XYZ Notebook X15z-5834ELS"/>
By inserting keywords into the image ALT tags within the code mode of the webpage, you will be giving the search engines more keywords to index when it scans and indexes the HTML code of your webpage thus giving your webpage more keyword relevance. And you can continue to add your most important keywords behind all of your images for that web page by inserting those keywords within the ALT image tags. i.e. Buy, Dell XYZ X15z-5834ELS Notebook, Laptop, Free Shipping, on sale, lowest price etc…

Product information
Next, you’ll want to copy and paste all of the product information from that product into the body of the webpage. And this is where frequency and placement of keywords becomes an advantage as well.
Keyword frequency and placement
While entering or copying and pasting the product information onto the page, you should insert your most important keywords, (the Dell XYZ Notebook), at least 2 times at the top of the product information within the first paragraph.
Keyword text links
Keyword rich text links are highly valued by search engines and improve search engine ranking as well. Therefore, this will be a good place to link one of those keyword phrases to that same page on your website.
To do so, simply highlight or select the keyword phrases and “right click”. Select hyperlink from the menu options and link those keywords to that very same page. (NOTE: Be sure to change the color of the text in the text link back to black to match the rest of the text on the page and remove the hyperlink underline from underneath those keywords so that people wont click on the link. The text link is there for the search engines to index and not for the reader to click on.)
Then towards the middle of the product page, you’ll want to perform the same procedure again and add your most important keywords, (the Dell XYZ Notebook), 2 times and then again, link one of those keyword phrases to that same page on your site.
Then again, at the end of the page, you’ll want to add your most important keywords, (the Dell XYZ Notebook), 2 more times and link one of those keyword phrases to that same page on your site.
To summarize keyword frequency and text links, your main keywords and keyword phrases should be placed 2 times at the beginning of the page, 2 times in the middle of the page and 2 times at the end of the product information page while linking 1 of each of those keyword phrases to that same page.
