Catalog and online retailers
made large strides in gaining market share.
Online apparel retailers marked a major
milestone with sales in the billions.
According to NPD, the percentage of total
apparel dollars spent on the Internet tripled
between September and November, leveling off at
year end.
Across all channels of distribution, sales of
men's apparel outpaced total market growth.
Women's apparel sales, which account for more
than half of all industry sales, lagged slightly
behind the market as a whole.
Within the women's
market, large/plus size apparel
continued to outperform other segments. |

| Sales of large sizes grew,
according to NPD.
Apparel sized 16 and over now comprises a $30
million market, which accounts for 30 percent of
all dollars spent on women's apparel. |

The trend that began with "Casual Fridays" has
matured into a key market driver for the apparel
industry. NPD's study uncovered that almost
without exception, apparel categories posting
the most robust growth are those that suit a
dressed down lifestyle.
American shoppers are now spending more apparel
dollars with online stores than in any other
channel except specialty stores. Also posting strong gains were online specialty
stores and online department stores, each of
which outpaced the overall market growth.
Findings from ComScore indicate that online
shoppers spent more on apparel in July, as
parents and students began back-to-school
preparations. The firm reports online spending
on apparel and accessories was up in June and
more than 35 million Americans visited an
apparel site in July. |

Apparent Online
Online clothing sales experienced an increase
during the holiday shopping season, according to
data from Retail Forward.
"This is significant because apparel is one of
those items that many thought would have
difficulty making traction online given
customers' desire to try on goods before
purchasing," comments Mary Brett Whitfield,
senior vice president and director of the Retail
Forward E-Retail Intelligence Program, a survey
of Internet users from December to January.
Measurement data from Nielsen//NetRatings
indicated that shopping sites were among the
most popular destinations for women,
particularly for clothing. Heavy traffic was
noted to sites that specialize in women's
apparel.
BIGResearch also found that apparel
bargain-hunters were more prevalent. Nearly
one-quarter (23.5 percent) of consumers only
bought clothing items that were on sale. |
