As consumers emerge
from their cocoons, they’re turning their
decorating passion to the outside and are
spending more money on their gardens and the
tools which are necessary to beautify their
gardens, according to Unity Marketing. Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing and
author of Why People Buy Things They Don't Need,
predicts Tool and Garden marketers and retailers
will enjoy a period of steady growth as
consumers increase their decorating focus in the
home's interior and the garden, patio and lawn.
"The fastest growing tools and garden category
was garden "hardware," i.e. accessories, tools,
products, furniture, tools and equipment that
enhance the consumers' gardening and home
improvement experience, as compared to garden
"software," i.e. the plants, seeds, shrubs,
trees and other plant material. |

More tools and garden consumers are turning to
home centers as well as online tools and garden
storefronts, such as Home Depot and Lowe's, to
make their garden purchases," Danziger says.
Three demographics distinguish the gardening
market: Home-owning, middle-aged, affluent,
while 80% of all U.S. households bought
something for their home improvements, lawn and
garden, the prime market for this sector today
is middle-aged, affluent home-owners.
The online and offline tools and garden market
is increasingly morphing into a luxury market.
Luxury garden purchases for high-end barbecues,
luxury patio and pool furniture and decorative
garden enhancements, i.e. pools, fountains, and
sculptures, were the most widely purchased
luxury product, second only to luxury
electronics in the latest luxury market survey. |

"The big opportunity for
tool and garden marketers and retailers is to
tap into consumers' growing passion to enhance
their enjoyment of the garden by adding luxury
accents, furniture, and accessories," Danziger
advises.
Increased spending driven by consumers' desire
to reconnect with nature, and an aging
population, is partly behind the success in tool
and garden-related spending. But the real driver
for growth is the consumers' passion to
reconnect with the natural world and to beautify
their homes.
As contemporary American culture becomes more
"virtual" computerized and electronic, consumers
feel a growing need to ground themselves in the
real world, a trend which is finding expression
in the home and garden as consumers divide their
yards into different "outdoor rooms." They are
inviting wildlife, including birds, bats,
turtles, frogs and exotic fish, into
increasingly elaborate garden getaways where
they escape from the modern world and connect
with the sounds, smells and sights of nature. |
