Retail Index finds jewelry
sales are up and not down, according to the
latest figures from the NRF/Forrester Online
Retail Index.
The index is produced by the National Retail
Federation and Forrester Research Inc. in
conjunction with Greenfield Online. "Valentine's Day was a big reason why consumers
spent over $17 million more in
February on jewelry than in January," said David
M. Cooperstein, research director at Forrester.
"The increase was also due to the
success of aggressive marketing
campaigns from high-end jewelers."
"The Internet as a retail channel remains
volatile, but as this channel matures we expect
online spending to more closely follow the
overall industry trend." |

The Index is based on 5,000 responses to an
online panel fielded by Greenfield Online during
the first 10 business days of each month. The
monthly panel is weighted to Forrester
Research's Benchmark Panel, which surveyed
nearly 90,000 U.S. and Canadian members of a
consumer mail panel developed by NPD Group, a
market research firm.
Data was weighted to represent the North
American population demographically.
Gold and silver jewelry has also become an
ecommerce frenzy as precious metals hit an all
time high and showed its’ market potential.
Furthermore, Gold and silver jewelry are the
only items that have risen in value even after
the point of sale.
Furthermore, as most jewelers already know:
Silver jewelry in particular has been a hot
seller amid economy conditions and high gold
prices. |

For National Jeweler's
latest product panel, 81 percent of respondents
reported that their silver jewelry sales have
trended upwards, and an incredible 90 percent
said that their stock of silver jewelry (in
dollar terms) is headed in the same direction.
The chief appeal of sterling silver for today's
budget-conscious consumers is, not surprisingly,
price. For jewelers, the allure of silver is
also tied into the profit margins they make on
the pieces.
While retailers might be missing out on margins
in categories such as loose diamonds, 73 percent
of respondents reported that they make margins
of 50 percent or higher on silver jewelry. When
asked if they thought the popularity of sterling
silver would fade as the economy recovers, more
than half of those surveyed said no, with a few
attributing its staying power to the influence
of younger consumers.
"I don't think that silver will fade as a
popular choice," one respondent wrote. "The
younger generation sees sterling silver as a
precious metal." Another predicted silver would
become "a staple for the Gen Y consumer."
However, quite a few respondents answered,
"Silver's popularity comes and goes, but
customers always value gold more. When they can
afford it again, they will buy it again."
Yet both gold and silver continue to be a
valuable item and this is why jewelry will
continue to be a top selling category. |
