The giftware industry has
generated billions in online retail sales,
according to a research report from Unity
Marketing. "Today's gifts market is experiencing dynamic
growth as consumers buy more gifts and home
decorative products for themselves, as a
personal reward,'' says Pam Danziger, president
of Unity Marketing.
“Products which have a personal, emotional link
to the consumer, such as collectibles or gifts
based upon licensed properties or which appeal
to multiple senses, including sight, sound,
scent, are in demand as consumers seek to make
their homes more comfortable and comforting,''
notes Danziger. Unity Marketing predicts a positive future on
the Internet for the gifts and the home
decorative market for the next several years. |

"A significant consumer trend that will play out
in the gifts as well as many other consumer
product categories will be a reaction towards
our increasingly technology-driven culture. As
their lives become more 'virtual' and dependent
upon computers and technology, consumers will
seek out gifts and decorative products which
will help ground them in the 'real' world. The
new touchstone for consumer marketers is to make
their products more 'REAL,' more concrete, more
solid, more grounded in reality," Danziger
commented.
The best-selling segment in the giftware
industry was Home Decorative Accessories.
Among the fastest growing categories in the Home
Decorative Accessories segment were Frames,
Tabletop gifts, Vases/Urns/Pots and Decorative
Boxes and Tins. Candles, the dominant category
in the segment, also posted gains.
More top billion-dollar sellers included
consumer electronics, tools, DVD, music, toys,
arts, crafts, jewelry, gift baskets and flowers
which helped many internet gift shops succeed
online. |

Stationery, Greeting Cards,
and Paper Products was the second largest
segment of the giftware market. While greeting
card sales were slow, growth in the category was
fueled by Social Stationery, and Gift Bags and
Wrap.
"This segment is being strongly impacted by the
Internet, with more and more Web sites offering
virtual greeting cards that can be
electronically mailed at a fraction of the cost
of a paper card," said Danziger. "At the same
time, social stationery is on the rise as
consumers start to swing back to communicating
with friends and family once again the
old-fashioned way -- on paper, even if a
personal computer was used to write and print
the letter," she continued.
The General Gifts segment achieved billion in
sales. Seasonal Decorations, the smallest
category in the giftware industry, posted the
high gains as well. While Christmas Decor still
dominates the category, Halloween Decor was the
fastest-growing segment.
Commenting on the importance of gift shopping to
the U.S. economy, Lee Eisenberg in his book
Shoptimism: Why the American Consumer Will Keep
on Buying No Matter What writes: "The gifts we
give, to others or to ourselves, add up to one
enormous gift to the Sell Side. Each of us, on
average, spends a couple of thousand dollars a
year on gifts, roughly half of it during the
'Hard Eight,' that is, the eight-week holiday
shopping season." |
