Getting signed up with distributors is as simple as contacting them, filling out their dealer application and then faxing it back to them in a timely manner.

However, before contacting distributors, it’s important to have your business set up and ready to operate and your business name should clearly state that you’re selling those products which the distributors are offering.

It’s important to have your website online and have at least one webpage built with a logo and company description in order to build instant credibility with distributors. It is also important to have your sales tax license in hand before contacting distributors as well. And your sales tax license should be in your business name and not your personal name.

When distributors see a sales tax license in the name of the owner of the business instead of the actual business name then many times the dealers’ application will be rejected.

The reason being is that distributors see resellers with sales tax licenses in their personal name as people who are looking to purchase products at wholesale for personal use instead of purchasing for resale. And those are not the type of resellers that distributors want to deal with.

Therefore, set up your business first, build a one page website and then obtain your sales tax license in your business name and proceed to contact distributors. And when you do contact the distributor, it’s best to keep the initial conversation short and simple.

Ask to see their line card (list) of manufacturers they represent and then request or download a reseller application from their website or have them fax it to you.

Write any questions down that you may have for the distributors before contacting them. Try not to ask too many questions as this will cause them to see you as an inexperienced individual, and unfortunately, most distributors don’t want to spend time dealing with such matters.

They’re more than happy to help a new business get started by opening an account with them but they don’t have the time to educate new business owners on how to run a business.

They’re in the sales industry just like you are. They want to take orders and make money. And all they want you to do is place your orders with them and let them take care of the rest.

Note: When filling out the dealer application do not ask for net terms (if you’re a new business). Most distributors will not offer net terms to new businesses. Furthermore, do not tell distributors that you’re working from home as well. And when filling out the dealer application, all you have to do is enter in your business information just as requested.

For trade references, you can give them bank references, and then enter the words “new business” for all other questions which do not apply to you. If you’re already signed up with other distributors then you can list those distributors as trade references as well.

Once you’re done filling out the distributor application then sign it and fax it back to them along with a copy of your sales tax license. And then once your application is approved, you can go ahead and start adding their products to your website and start selling their products online.

There are many distributors that you can get signed up with. However, it is only needful to get signed up with one or two major distributors and then try to do the bulk of your business with them in order to get better pricing and better services as well.

Yet it will be to your advantage to get signed up with multiple distributors to use those extra distributors as back up, especially during the holiday seasons.

Furthermore, when distributors see that you listed their competitors as trade references on your dealer application then they will begin to compete for your business and get you the best deals possible.

Getting singed up with distributors is as simple as contacting them, filling out their application and then start selling online. And then all you have to do is start taking and placing orders and leave the shipping to them.
